With Halloween drawing to a close, Bonfire Night is now just around the corner — and while we may love the fireworks, our feline friends often don’t!
Cats have much more sensitive hearing than humans and the loud bangs, flashes and strange smells can be quite frightening. The good news is, a bit of preparation goes a long way.
Here’s how to help your cat feel safe, calm and cared for this Bonfire Night.
1. Create a safe space
Set up a quiet, enclosed area with their favourite blanket, toys and maybe even a cardboard box hideaway. Ensure they have access to a litter tray and fresh water indoors.
2. Drown out the noise
Close curtains, shut windows and pop on some soft music or the TV to muffle firework sounds.
3. Stick to their routine
Feed and play with your cat at the usual times.
Familiar routines help them feel secure even when things get noisy outside.
4. Use relaxing scents
A Calming Valerian Spray like Fred's can work wonders. Gently spritz it around your cat’s safe space around 15 minutes before the fireworks start.
Valerian’s natural properties can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation — perfect for those jittery moments.
5. Stay calm yourself
Cats are sensitive to our emotions. Keep your tone relaxed and your movements gentle — it reassures them that everything’s okay. Soft play or grooming can be comforting if your cat seeks your attention. Never scold or force them out of hiding — let them come to you in their own time.
Calm cats, happy homes.
Bonus tip: While it’s best to keep your kitties safe indoors, make sure your they are microchipped and their details are up-to-date, just in case.
Final Thoughts
Firework season often lasts a few weeks — and New Year’s Eve will come sooner than we think! Try to keep your cat’s safe space set up at least throughout November and gradually desensitise them to loud sounds for the season.
A few small changes can make a big difference. With a safe space, familiar comforts and a calm environment, your cat will feel far more secure — and you can both enjoy a peaceful evening together.
